“Using a shared vision to make a lasting impact.” Lorenza Chiarello Marketing Support Retail and SME Banking Division, Intesa Sanpaolo Project
In the digital age, coding is basic literacy, and kids need to understand the technology they are using every day. So why not try and make a difference, let’s teach kids to code and make an impact on closing the gap in scientific education. And so we did, together with Talent Garden we organized an incredible event called “Young Innovators Day”. Talent Garden gave us the competencies we needed to design a coding workshop that would promote financial education. We did it through a video game in the Scratch programming environment applied to XME dindi, the electronic piggy bank from Intesa Sanpaolo. Also, using the Makey laboratory, we let the children experiment with the principles of robotics by connecting digital objects to commonly used household items with small sensors. During the workshop, kids had fun interacting dynamically with the Pepper robot during the Pepper show, while learning about the mechanisms of the electronic piggy banks. But we did not stop there, we took the opportunity also to teach the parents of these young digital natives. A free workshop in the field of parental control and the world of education 3.0 focused on protecting online reputation, privacy, and handling inappropriate content. With Talent Garden, we set goals for this project like teaching the children how to apply mathematical principles to software development and to learn logic and programming mechanisms, but also to boost their creativity, curiosity and ability to work in a group while having fun. Part of the project was also about our spaces and seeing the bank in an informal manner. It was also an opportunity for us to get closer to the young digital natives of today and understand them better. The workshops were held by the amazing faculty from the Talent Garden Innovation School inside the Intesa Sanpaolo Hubs the same day simultaneously in ten different cities across Italy with 1,000 children participating. This innovative and experimental project was born from the synergy of a shared vision between us and Talent Garden. Learning the basics of coding and understanding robots helps children to appreciate how things work. They develop the ability to bounce back after failure. They learn that failure isn’t a bad thing but a learning opportunity. This is one of the most important reasons why kids should code because they will learn quickly that ‘debugging’ your code is half the fun. We also understand that this generation needs these digital skills not only for their future but for ours and the impact they will have in creating a better world. That’s why we want to repeat this event and next year we will have a second edition.
